ABOUT OUR FOOD
Right from the start, Elizabeth Dawson produced only food that her family enjoyed eating. She refuses to compromise on ingredients, and so wherever possible all the produce used is fresh. A vegetarian, Elizabeth will not use any animal fats, nor will she use any product that has been genetically modified. No unnatural preservatives are utilised in the baking and processing nor are mixes used. All our products are created from raw materials on site.

OUR HISTORY
Elizabeth and John Dawson have lived overseas most of their lives and apart from four years in the United States, they were in Africa and the West Indies where good bread could not be found. Elizabeth started to bake her own bread and continued the practice after taking early retirement to be near her family in Ireland.
A small health shop in Kinsale, where the Dawson’s lived, heard about the home bread-making and approached Elizabeth to make some for them. She agreed, and shortly afterwards she was approached by another shop in the same town, then a new hotel and then yet another hotel… soon the Dawson’s were involved in a full-scale enterprise and such was the demand that they decided to incorporate the business in late 1997. Since the end of that year, HERON QUALITY FOODS Ltd has substantially increased its business, mostly by word of mouth.

The business is situated on a high ridge within a converted farm between Bandon and Timoleague in the glorious West Cork countryside.

In December 2001 Heron bought the liquidated assets of the largest gluten free manufacturer in Ireland. A gluten free area was created in Heron, and the directors took the decision to produce only organic goods , certified by Organic Trust Ltd, within this new area. The now improved gluten free foods are suitable for coeliacs, vegetarians, wheat free, haleel, kosher, low fat diets and in some cases diabetics.

Heron Foods are fully accredited with the BRC (British Retail Consortium) with a “A Grade”, the highest possible standard.
